FALLS CITY — The Wynot Blue Devils travelled to Mead to play the Falls City Sacred Heart Lady Irish with the D2-2 district game and a trip to state on the line on Friday night. The Lady Blue Devils gave a valiant effort but came up short as the Lady Irish earned the 47-36 win to advance to Lincoln.
In a very physical game the Lady Irish won the game at the free throw line going 18 for 25 while the Lady Devils had less chances connecting for 7 of 11 charity tosses.
“I was proud of how the girls showed up and played hard the entire game,” commented Wynot Head Coach Steve Wieseler” Kenna Oligmueller would lead all scorers for the gals in blue pouring in 20 points. Haley Wieseler tried to help the Lady Blue cause with her seven points.
Falls City Sacred Heart got double figures from Jentry Lechtenberg and Avery Santo with 14 and 12 points respectively. All of Santo’s points would come from three-point range.
It was a defensive battle early in the first quarter. Wynot got four points from Kenna Oligmueller and a basket by Haley Wieseler. The Irish got five points from Dorothy Westengaard, a basket plus one from Jentry Lechtenberg and a late three pointer from Avery Santo that gave them a 11-6 lead after one period.
The second quarter saw the game stay tight.
Sacred Heart got four points from Jentry Lechtenberg and three pointers from Avery Santo and Daycee Witt. Kenna Oligmueller would shine for the Lady Devils hitting for nine points and Jordan Foxhoven had a put back down low as Wynot cut the Irish lead to 21-17 at the half.
Wynot opened the third quarter with a threepointer by Addison Sharpe that cut the Irish lead to one point but that was as close to the lead that they would get. Kenna Oligmueller would continue to find success inside scoring five more points. Falls City Sacred Heart’s Santo hit her third trey of the game, Daycee Witt hit a put-back inside and the Irish went 6-8 from the freethrow line to extend their lead to 34-26 going into the final period of play.
In the final quarter Wynot tried to rally behind five points from Haley Wieseler and a basket each from Oligmueller and Jordan Foxhoven. Sacred Heart would not yield, however as, Avery Santo hit her fourth three-pointer and the Lady Irish hit 6-11 from the charity stripe to seal the 47-36 win and advance to the state tournament.
