1985: Cardettes qualify for state tourney

75 Years Ago - March 2, 1950 RANDOLPH – The State Highway Department announced Monday that the apparent low bidder on 8.3 miles paving between Belden and Randolph was Abel Construction Co. of Lincoln with a bid of $527,639.

The bid was a part of an estimated $1,799,274 worth of work on Nebraska roads, and is one of 11 projects on which bids were made. This bid by Abels was the biggest of any contract bid made, and exceeded by $230,000 the next largest of $296,808 for 5.5 miles paving between Tekamah and Decatur.

The bid placed by Abels was for: Randolph-Belden 8.3 miles grading, grading and gravel for detour, gravel concrete pavement, culverts, bridge. *** RANDOLPH – Mr. and Mrs. George Wacker, who live one mile southwest of Randolph, observed their fortieth wedding anniversary on Thursday, February 23. All five of their children and their families and other relatives and friends were present for the occasion.

Mr. and Mrs. Wacker’s marriage took place 40 years ago in their native land of Russia. Two and one half years after their marriage they came to the United States, settling in Nebraska. They lived first in Stanton County then came to Carroll, where they resided a number of years, and five years ago they bought the place south of Randolph. Their present modern home and its conveniences are a far cry from the humble home they left in Russia 37 years ago.

The evening of their fortieth wedding anniversary, Mr. Wacker displayed a keepsake of his wedding 40 years ago. It was his white wedding shirt, which was handmade by his bride. Kuhl Studio photographer took pictures in the home of the Wackers and their children. It was their first family picture in 25 years.

60 Years Ago - Feb. 25, 1965 RANDOLPH – Four Randolph men attended a meeting at Pierce Tuesday at which they learned details of the Nebraska Centennial Community Betterment Contest.

Attending the session were Marvin Closter, Harry Huwaldt, Roy Gibson and Leonard Leise.

Randolph has been entered in the contest, and will compete in a division with towns of 800 to 1,999 population.

RANDOLPH – Cadet Captain James J. Wintz of the ROTC Detachment of Creighton University, Omaha, has been awarded a medal and citation as a Distinguished Military Student. The citation was signed by Major General Kermit L. Davis of the XVI Army Corps.

The award was presented February 9 by Lt. Col. Leo C. McCarthy at Creighton University, to eight cadets of the 1965 graduating class for “Displaying outstanding qualities of leadership, high moral character, noteworthy academic achievement, and exceptional aptitude for military service.”

Cadet Captain Wintz is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Wintz of Randolph.

50 Years Ago - Feb. 27, 1975 RANDOLPH – Thieves struck late Monday evening or early Tuesday morning at Hartz Pharmacy.

Early indications are that the thieves gained access by breaking through two wooden doors and a steel-chained door in the rear of the Randolph business.

Vincent Hartz, owner of the pharmacy, said a variety of items were stolen including watches, cigarettes, pipes, ballpoint pens, compasses and a small amount of drugs. *** RANDOLPH – Navy Seaman Recruit Laura A. Tharnish, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred L. Tharnish, graduated from recruit training for women at the Naval Training Center at Orlando, Fla.

The training included instruction in seamanship, military regulations, fire fighting, close order drill, first aid and Navy history.

She is scheduled to report to Hospital Corpsman A School at Great Lakes, Ill.

RANDOLPH – Church Women United in Randolph will celebrate World Day of Prayer on Friday, March 7, at the United Methodist church. The ladies of St. John’s Lutheran church, St. Frances Catholic Church and the United Methodist Church will join with women in many lands on the 89th World Day of Prayer.

The theme for World Day of Prayer in 1975 is “Become Perfectly One.”

The International committee of Church Women United each year select one of the national committees around the world to prepare the service. The 1975 service has been prepared by the Women’s Ecumenical Prayer Fellowship in Egypt.

40 Years Ago - Feb. 28, 1985 RANDOLPH – Grand Opening will be held on Saturday at the West Side Service on Highway 20 by Paul and Bonnie Backer.

During the open house, special prices will be in effect on Firestone tires as well as lunch being served.

The Backers invite everyone in the community and the surrounding area to stop by and join them on their grand opening and to see what their new business has to offer. *** RANDOLPH – It was announced this week that Mrs. Allen (Barb) Burbach will be the new site manager at the Randolph Senior Citizen Center following the resignation of Mrs. Doug (Dee) Wilson.

Mrs. Wilson will be moving with her husband and daughter to Bertrand where he is employed by K-N Energy, Inc.

30 Years Ago - March 1, 1995 RANDOLPH – The Nebraska 4-H Recognition and Incentive Program provides inspiration and motivation to many 4-Hers. Members compete for their county’s district and state recognition by reporting their 4-H project achievements and accomplishments, as well as their leadership and citizenship activities. This year 27 4-Hers from 11 counties in the Northeast District participated in District competition.

Forty records were reviewed by the 1995 Awards Judging Committee and most of the records were selected to go on to state competition this summer. Five 4-Hers from Pierce County were nominated to represent the Northeast District in State competition. State winners will be given the opportunity to participate in the 4-H Youth Congress to be in Memphis, Tenn., Nov. 24-28.

The following 4-Hers were selected for the outstanding 4-H leadership in the following areas: Wendi Bierschenk, daughter of Gaylen and Jean Bierschenk, in Citizenship; Megan Patent, daughter of Rod and Carmen Patent, in Achievement National Conference; and Jeff Carstens, son of Dean and Ruth Carstens, in National Dairy Conference.

RANDOLPH – Kim Riedmiller, Kelly Calder, Melissa Romohr, and Ryan Meyer were Randolph’s representatives at the Cedar County Spelling Contest in Hartington on Febr. 22.

Out of 28 contestants vying for one spot on the regional competition in Omaha, Riedmiller finished fourth, Meyer was fifth, Calder and Romohr tied for eleventh.

Among the spelling demons were poinsettia, deciduous, deceitful, miniature and the winning word effervescent. All are to be congratulated for their hard work and dedication.

RANDOLPH – Fire crews were called to extinguish a chimney fire Sunday, Feb. 26 at the Cary Kruse home at approximately 4 p.m. The fire originated in a woodburning stove in the basement of the house. The fire filled the house with smoke due to a clogged chimney.

Firemen extinguished the fire with chimney packs, according to Randolph Fire Chief Lavern Scott.

20 Years Ago - March 2, 2005 RANDOLPH – Jason Schmit isn’t the type of person that can ignore a problem.

The Randolph High School senior, the son of Paul and Corinne Schmit, Randolph, sat at the 2004 elementary Christmas concert waiting for his family to arrive. He passed the time people watching. Schmit, who was seated in the folding chairs and normally sits up off the gymnasium floor said he had a perfect view of the bleachers behind him. The lack of a hand rail made it very difficult for some people to get up and down the bleachers.

With guidance from Principal Steve Rinehardt, Schmit designed, built and installed permanent hand rails that fold right up with the bleachers proving a time saving and convenience factor the school has not had since the building of the new gymnasium.

RANDOLPH – Randolph’s Mark Linville recently returned as one of 30 Nebraska LEAD XXIII participants who completed their International Study/Travel Seminar in South Korea, China and Hong Kong.

Linville shared some of the highlights of this trip, such as the visit to Beijing, China to Tianamen Square.

Linville was surprised by the amount of military located everywhere in China, but especially at the Tianamen Square. He said that is partially due to the fact that at the square, despite what has occurred there in the past, it remains the place to go if people have something to say.

RANDOLPH – A birthday celebration was held on Sun., February 27 in honor of Kevin Janssen at the Colonial Manor, hosted by his family. Among the many family and friends, the Randolph Volunteer Fire Department arrived in the old fire truck to wish their former fireman friend a Happy Birthday. Kevin was a member of the Randolph Volunteer Fire Department for 10 years.

10 Years Ago - March 4, 2015 HARTINGTON – A Cedar County man has filed papers with the County Clerk’s office to recall County Commissioner Jerry Wiese.

Wiese was first elected to office in 2012. He defeated long-time Commissioner Marlen Kraemer in the primary election that year and was then unopposed in the general election to earn a four-year term in office.

William A. Heitman, Laurel, has filed papers with the Cedar County Clerk’s office to have Wiese removed from his position. *** RANDOLPH – Elkhorn Valley Equipment is opening a downtown office at 108 East Broadway in Randolph on March 10.

Elkhorn Valley Equipment will be offering their usual services which include a certified electrician along with GSI grain bins and other supplies at the Randolph location.

Randolph is Elkhorn Valley Equipment’s first branch office to be located outside of the main Tilden facility. *** RANDOLPH – Sandra Kuhlman, a Randolph resident, doesn’t want anyone to have to face cancer alone.

Kuhlman has firsthand knowledge concerning the important role “Relay for Life” plays in the lives of cancer victims and their family members.

This is the second year for Kuhlman, a breast cancer survivor, to serve as a co-chairperson for Relay for Life which has been held in Randolph for the third consecutive year.
