City Council approves 13 new permits
HARTINGTON — The Hartington City Council made sure Monday that area residents would soon be hearing banging hammers and buzzing saws slicing through the spring time silence.
The Council approved 13 building permits at their Monday meeting. One permit was for a new Hartelco storage building on Bow Street across from Schulte Automotive, while 12 of them were for new houses in the Nordby Addition on the eastern edge of Hartington.
The 13 permits is the most the council has approved at one sitting in at least 35 years, if not ever.
The building permits were requested by Crown LLC of Omaha.
The homes are being built by Nick Haselhorst's Level Up Construction Company. Council members noted infrastructure work has already begun at the site.
Omaha developer Rob Woodling first brought the idea of putting in a new housing development for the Nordby Addition in September of 2023. He will have 12 homes built between Franklin and Main Streets just east of Portland Avenue.
A new street, Nordby Avenue, is being built and runs from Franklin to Main and seperate the lots on the east side from the lots on the west side of the street. An area for drainage is also being planned.
Woodling has already built similiar rent-to-own developments in Wayne and Wisner.
While the homes are designed to meet guidelines for low-income housing, in no way should they be considered cheap homes, Woodling said in a 2023 Cedar County News interview.
Wayne Area Economic Development Coordinator Luke Virgil said his community has worked with Woodling on several projects. He has been an asset to the community, Virgil said.
Liquor License
In other business at Monday's meeting, the Council held a public hearing on a Class I liquor license application for Ma’ Mona Grill LLC, which owns and operates Ma’ Mona Mexican Grill on Highway 57 in Hartington. The license was approved unanimously.
The Council approved a Special Designated Liquor License for Cedar Catholic High School for their annual Cedar Catholic Gala celebration at the end of March.
The Council also gave its nod of approval for the Hartington Volunteer Fire Department to appoint Easton Becker to the squad.
Council President Cody Christensen conducted the meeting in the absence of Mayor Mark Becker. The next Council meeting is set for Monday March 10 at 5 p.m. at the Hartington City Hall.
