Lady Wildcats are eliminated from SubDistricts

HARTINGTON — Hartington-Newcastle took to the court against Bloomfield for the second time this season and for the second time, the Queen Bees stung the Lady Wildcats to bounce them from the D1-3 Sub-District Girls Basketball Tournament at the Monsignor Werner Activities Center Feb. 18, 44-38.

“We didn’t quite have enough to overcome our turnovers in this game,” Lady Wildcat coach Grant Rolfes said. “I thought we competed well, gave it a run in the fourth but had just put ourselves in too big of a hole.”

In fact, the teams played evenly in final three quarters of the game, but Bloomfield had gotten out to a 13-7 lead at the end of the opening eight minutes and the final score indicated the six-point deficit.

Vayda Lippert did everything in her power to help prolong the season.

The Lady ‘Cats freshman poured in 23 points, hauled in eight rebounds while handing out four assists.

“Vayda had a nice game for us attacking the basket,” said Rolfes. “Defensively, for the most part we did what we wanted to do with Mlady, she’s a talented player and the group around her made enough plays to win. Bloomfield is a talented team and one that will keep improving over these years.”

Madyson Mlady finished with 16 points Karissa Bruning added seven for Hartington-Newcastle and Hazel Hochstein tossed in four.

The Lady Wildcats finished the season with a 12-12 record.

“I thought we competed well throughout the year,” the coach said. “Credit to our seniors, McKenzie Bruning, Alejandra Reyes and Maddie Steffen. It is always tough to see a senior group go, this one is a another special one too.”
