WSC symphonic band to give March performance

WAYNE — The Wayne State College Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble will paint picturesque scenes with music at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 4, in Ramsey Theatre, located in the Peterson Fine Arts Building.

The performance is free and open to the public.

The performance will also be livestreamed. To view the livestream, go to www.wsc.edu/ watch-live. The program is accessible by selecting the event from the Music Events list at www.wsc.edu/ music.

Symphonic Band repertoire depicts rich British flavor with “Ramsgate March” by Carl Strommen and the lush beauty of Germany in “Ammerland” by Jacob de Haan. “African Dreams” by Brant Karrick pays tribute to one man’s innovative creation of a windmill from metal scraps to help his neighbors. The Symphonic Band is conducted by Michael Genslinger, assistant director of bands at Wayne State.

The Wind Ensemble casts a net of dark, magical mystery with “The Necromancer” by Julie Giroux followed by the gleeful good luck of “Charm” by Kevin Puts. “(not) Alone” by Randall Standridge explores the dramatic yet hopeful world of mental health while “Virgen de la Macarena” conjures up images of bullfighting. The Wind Ensemble is conducted by Dr. Josh Calkin, director of bands at Wayne State, with Genslinger serving as trumpet soloist.
