Grapplers grab third at districts
WILCOX – Randolph wrestled its way to third place in the team standings in the D-2 District Boys Individual Championships Tournament at Wilcox-Hildreth High School Feb. 17 by scoring 111.5 points.
Plainview won the team title with 193 while Yutan was second with 118. Southern was right behind the Cardinals in fourth with 108.5 with Wilcox-Hildreth fifth with 98.5.
The Cards advanced five wrestlers to this weekend’s Nebraska State Boys Individual Championships with a runner-up, three thirds and a fourth.
Gage Jensen, who takes a 45-6 record into his state meet led Randolph with a secondplace finish at 165 pounds. Cole Jensen at 132, John Leija at 150 and Gavin Wortman at 175 all got third.
Bentley Reimers qualified at 106 with a fourth-place showing.
Gage Jensen pinned his way to the finals then ran into Graiden Ritner from Wilcox-Hildreth.
Ritner was unbeaten coming into the district final and exited the same way after earning a fall over Jensen in the second period.
Cole Jensen was defeated in his semifinals match by Colt Kromarek of Plainview then defeated Abram Norton of Cambridge, 11-8 in a tight match to get into the third-place match where he defeated Evan Crawford of Centennial in a major decision, 12-2.
Leija grabbed his ticket by sticking Cambridge's Carter Hanes in 3:37 in the thirdplace bout and Wortman defeated another Cambridge wrestler in his third-place match to advance to Omaha by major decision, 15-5.
Reimers held on to qualify after winning a consolation semi-finals match over Luke Henzeker from Pawnee City by technical fall, 15-0 with 1:36 left in the opening two minutes, but fell in the third-place match, 16-0 with 1:44 left in the first.
The Cardinals are set to begin the 2025 Nebraska Individual Boys Championship Feb. 20 at the CHI Health Center in Omaha with the opening round bouts to begin at 9:30 a.m.
