Bears split pair of games over the week

LAUREL - The Laurel-Concord-Coleridge boys’ basketball team split a pair of games this past week, dropping a 62-53 decision to Summerland on the road, Feb. 11 then came home to Laurel to turn away Wisner-Pilger 73-51 with one game left on the regular season schedule.

The Bears were a bit lethargic coming out of the gate against the Gators and trailed 10-2 early in the opening eight minutes.

Cade Johnson scored inside to make it 10-4 then Caleb Erwin hit a shot from behind the 3-point line to answer a Wisner-Pilger bucket and made the score 12-7 with 5:11 remaining in the first quarter.

Johnson then stole the ball from the Gators and hit Erwin running down the court for a lay up then hit a trifecta of his own to make it 14-12.

Wisner-Pilger would hit a long ball to make it 17-12, but a Drey Puppe 3 and another basket from beyond the arc by Erwin gave the Bears their first lead of the night, 18-17. LCC finished a 9-0 run at the end of the first frame to take a 2117 lead into quarter number two.

Laurel-Concord-Coleridge opened the second the way it ended the first, sprinting out to a 10-2 run to make it 31-19 and got to the intermission with a 43-27 advantage.

The Bears added six points to the lead in the second half to close out the game going away by the 72-51 final score.

Gibson Roberts led four Bears in double digits with 20 points, Johnson wound up with 16 and Erwin and Puppe each tossed in 14.

Roberts just missed a double-double with nine rebounds and also handed out five assists, Puppe and Johnson each grabbed seven missed shots.

The Bobcats jumped out to a 22-14 lead over LCC at Summerland High School Feb. 11 and added a point to the lead at the halftime huddle.

Summerland outscored Laurel-Concord-Coleridge 17-14 in the third frame then held on for the nine-point win.

Roberts paced the Bears offense again with 21 points on the night. Eli Haisch and Erwin each tossed in nine, Johnson added eight and Tanner Thompson chipped in six.

Thompson also grabbed seven boards in the contest and Erwin handed out six assists.

LCC will finish the regular season with a road trip north to take on 15-7 Wynot on Feb. 21.
