Wayne man buys the White Eagle Cafe

LAUREL — For the first time this winter the snowplows were called into action to clear northeast Nebraska highways of drifting snow that fell in this area Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. The depth of the snow averaged from four to five inches at South Sioux City to the high of 15 inches at Ainsworth. Laurel received 10 inches.

LAUREL — “Pete” Peterson of Wayne has purchased the White Eagle Cafe located east of the tourist cabins on Highway 20 in Laurel.

The cafe had been formerly operated by Andy French. He will call the cafe “Pete’s Cafe.”

LAUREL — The State Highway Department called for bids on U.S. Highway 20, Randolph-Belden for 8.3 miles of concrete paving as a part of an estimated two million dollars in road work for proposed February 24 letting.

COLERIDGE — The Coleridge Fire Department was called out to the Farmers Union Store about 10 o’clock Sunday morning, where a motor had caught fire in the basement of the store.

COLERIDGE — The heaviest snowfall of the season, from eight to 10 inches, hit this area Sunday and Monday, making driving conditions hazardous and slow. Few roads were reported blocked. Winds Monday and Tuesday caused drifting, leaving some rural roads blocked.

The snow followed unseasonably warm temperatures. Temps were normal the first of the week, with the high reading about 30 and the lowest reading was on Wednesday morning when the mercury dropped to near zero.

The sky was clear Wednesday and the mercury climbed steadily throughout the day. The Nebraska Weather and Crop report stated that the wheat crop received immeasurable benefit from the snow and that hay and pasture crops will be benefited by the snow.

COLERIDGE — Coming Farm Sales: Feb. 21 — Everett Murkle Farm Sale consisting of a line of farm machinery, cattle, horses, chickens, hay, feed, and other farm equipment. Feb. 23 — Max Glover’s Farm Sale, offering 126 head of livestock, including 21 head of registered Aberdeen-Angus cattle, 84 hogs, two horses, full line of farm machinery and equipment.

LAUREL — Madonna Dickey has enrolled as a freshman at Westmar College in LeMars, Iowa for the second semester. Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. Ray Dickey.

LAUREL — Eleven contestants participated in the Christian Temperance Union speech contest. Sally Hattig won first in the gold contest and Linda Martindale first in the silver contest.

LAUREL — The FHA and FFA sweetheart dance was held in the Allen Legion Hall Saturday evening. LaVonne Mattes was crowned sweetheart queen and Ron Isom was crowned king.
