1985: Pender stuns Bears in SubDistrict

Feb. 19, 1970

COLERIDGE — Coleridge wrapped up the Lewis and Clark Conference title this past week as they defeated Wynot and Ponca.

The Wynot game saw Coleridge hitting the century mark as they won 108-62.

Friday evening Ponca was defeated 74- 58.

Against Ponca, Jim Hansen played an excellent game and led his team with 17 points. Steve Hines, Roger Hahne and Doug Hefner were next in the scoring department as they scored 15, 12, and 12 points respectively. Coleridge got off to a snailspace and found themselves behind by 15 points early in the first quarter and trailed 21-12 at first quarter and 31-27 at half.

Feb. 19, 1970

COLERIDGE — Terry Wilkerson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dean Wilkerson, will represent Coleridge at Cornhusker Boys’ State to be held in Lincoln, June 6-12. Terry was chosen by a vote of the high school teachers on the basis of school citizenship, leadership qualities and scholastic standing. The cost of sending the Boys’ stater to Lincoln is handled by the local American Legion Post, Commercial Club and the Coleridge Fire Department. No alternate was named.

Feb. 20, 1980

COLERIDGE — Coleridge Chargers, shooting 39 percent from the field, moved one step up in District D-3 action at Rosalie Monday night as they defeated Bancroft 48-42. Penny Smith and Karla Hefner carried the offense in the scoring column as they hit 20 and 12 points. Jill Kramer netted eight with Muffy Mitchell and Julie Brandl each hitting four. Kramer had nine rebounds and Smith six. Mitchell and Hefner played excellent defensive games with Muffy being credited with four steals.

COLERIDGE — A new Queen and King of Hearts was named Thursday from the residents at Park View Haven Nursing Home. For 1980 Charlotte Peck was named Queen and Henry Peck was selected King.

LAUREL — Renee Vanderheiden and Steve Dybdal were selected as Miss and Mr. Photogenic at a special coronation ceremony. They also reigned over the dance that followed.

LAUREL — Debra A. Kint has been accepted for the 1985 fall term at National College at Rapid City, SD. Miss Kint is a senior at Laurel-Concord High School. She will be enrolled in the Travel and Airline Careers Program.

LAUREL- The Laurel Lady Bears experienced a heartbreaking loss to Wausa Thursday, 61-48.

Only a week earlier Laurel had bested Wausa in the Lewis and Clark Tournament, 42-41.

Leading the Lady Bears was Vanderheiden with 26 big ones; Wendy Robson added 12 points, Michelle Joslin and Sara Adkins each had five.

DIXON - Deborah White, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Duane White of Dixon was one of 49 nursing students receiving a cap at a ceremony held Sunday, February 3 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church.

Sioux City, Iowa.

Deborah is a 1984 graduate of Laurel-Concord High School and will complete the registered nurse training program in June, 1986.

Feb. 13, 1985

LAUREL — Two high school honor bands consisting of 209 musicians from three states will perform at Wayne State College’s 10th annual Honor Band Festival, Saturday, Feb. 16.

Representing Laurel in the gold band will be Miki Kosaka and Shelly Buss playing B clarinet, Jim Pehrson playing alto sax, Dan White on the tuba, Wendy Robson on the drums, Paul Pearson on the T-bone and Chad Blatchford on the trumpet. In the black band, Rachel Boeckenhauer will play the flute, Gail Twiford will play the mallets, Sara Adkins and Heidi Pehrson will play trumpet.

Feb. 20, 1985

LAUREL- A stunning upset loss to the Pender Pendragons in the sub-district finals at Wayne State College Thursday abruptly ended the dream season of the Laurel-Concord Lady Bears.

Laurel, ranked seventh in the state before the game, nearly withstood one of the most torrid shooting performances in Nebraska girls basketball this year. Despite a 62 percent field goal percentage by Pender, the Lady Bears stayed in the game literally to the final two seconds before bowing, 53-50.
