HARTINGTON — The Wynot Blue Devils and the Hartington Newcastle Wildcats battled down to the final buzzer Friday night with Wynot coming out on top by a bucket — 47-45.
The Wildcats led for most of the game before the Blue Devils rallied late in the fourth quarter to escape with the win.
The Blue Devils had trouble dealing with the Wildcats size all night as they were out-rebounded 30-26.
The Blue Devils had to use their long range shooting ending the game with a 12-3 advantage from beyond the arc to earn the victory.
Wynot was led by the sharp shooting of Devin Brummer as he rained in seven three-pointers for 21 points. Kotner Koch also hit for double figures with 10 points.
Hartington-Newcastle got a big game from Brayden Lammers who consistently drove to the basket to take top scoring honors for the game with 22 points.
Cole Rosener just missed scoring double figures with his nine points for the game.
The Blue Devils were sluggish on offense in the opening quarter as they would get a three pointer each from Devin Brummer and one from Kotner Koch. Hartington Newcastle would race to a 15-6 lead fueled by four points each from Braydon Lammers and Cole Roesner along with a trey from Cole Heimes.
The two teams would trade buckets in the second quarter. The Blue Devils would hit from long distance getting three pointers from Devin Brummer, Killian Steinhaus, Justin Heimes and Andrew Haberman. The Wildcats answered with five points from Austin Sudbeck and seven points by Brayden Lammers as they maintained the 27-19 halftime advantage.
Wynot would begin to nibble away at Hartington Newcastle’s lead in the third quarter. Devin Brummer hit twice more from long range. Nixon Heimes also hit from distance and Koch worked the paint area for five points. The Wildcat got seven more points from Brayden Lammers and some free throws as they hung onto the 38-33 lead.
Wynot would take their first lead of the game at the three minute mark of the fourth quarter thanks to a trio of three pointers by Devin Brummer. Hartington would regain the lead as Brayden Lammer knifed the basket for a pair of baskets and Cole Roesner hit a three pointer. Wynot got a floater in the lane from Andrew Haberman, and Kotner Koch and Haberman hit the front ends of free throws to give the Blue Devils a two point lead.
The Wildcats had several chances in the final minute to tie the score but could get nothing to fall and Wynot escaped with the narrow win.
