COLERIDGE — A check artist, going by the name of Leo Chamberlain, who was employed as a farm hand at the Ed Meier farm, forged several checks in this area the past week and then skipped the country before he was caught.

Chamberlain had placed his name at the county extension office as being available as a farm hand.

His services were obtained by Mr. Meier through that office. While the Meiers were away from home Chamberlain evidently secured Mr. Meier’s signature from an old check and mastered writing the signature. He then made out several checks to himself and signed Mr. Meier’s signature.

He passed a total of about $175 worth of checks at business houses here and at Hartington, bought a car at Hartington and then borrowed $100 on the car at a Hartington finance company before making his departure.
