Wynot boys claim L&C title
WAYNE — The Wynot Blue Devils are champions of the Lewis and Clark Conference as they upset the Wausa Vikings on Monday night in a game played at Wayne State College. With the score tied at 49-49 it took overtime where the Blue Devils would outscore the Vikings 13-9 to earn hotly contested matchup by a final score of 61-58.
Each team were lead by double figure scorers. Wausa got 19 points from Matt Schindler and 15 points from Colton Baue. Wynot would counter with 20 points from Killian Steinhaus and 19 points from Andrew Haberman.
In the opening quarter it was a back and forth affair. Wausa was led by Matt Schindler and Preston Schote with four points each. Wynot got five points from Killian Steinhaus and a basket each from Kotner Koch and Lane Heimes to slip out to a 13-12 advantage.
The tempo continued on an even keel in the second quarter. Wynot got eight big points from Andrew Haberman. Wausa’s Colten Baue hit for five points and Matt Carlson and Jake Munter both had a bucket as both teams scored 11 points in the quarter and Wynot clung to 24-23 halftime lead.
In the third quarter the Vikes had a basket each from Lincoln Thorell, Matt Schindler and Mac Carlson. Wausa also hit 7-8 from the charity stripe. Wynot got a pair of three pointers from the left corner from Kotner Koch and one from the top of key by Steinhaus as the Devils opened up a 40-35 lead going into the final frame.
Wausa came back in the fourth quarter. Wynot got five more points from Andrew Haberman and a three-pointer from Steinhaus. The Vikings got five more points from Matt Schindler and with just seconds left in the game Colton Baue beat the Wynot defender around the left side for to tie it at 49-49 and send the game into overtime.
In the extra period Matt Schindler would score five more points and Jake Munter had a basket for the Vikings. Wynot would steal the win thanks to seven points from Steinhaus and a long three pointer from Justin Heimes to earn the tough win and the Conference championship plaque.
