Wynot tops Randolph, Bloomfield to advance to L&C championship game

WAYNE — The Wynot Blue Devils used a big 17-2 third quarter run to bust open their semifinal showdown with the Randolph Cardinals to advance to the championship game of the Lewis and Clark tournament with the 60-49 win.

Wynot took on Wausa at Wayne State College Monday for the Conference Championship.

Three-point shooting was the deciding factor in this game as Wynot rained in 13 treys for the game. Devin Brummer took scoring honors as he drained seven 3-pointers for the Blue Devils. Kotner Koch hit three times from distance as well and finished with 10 points. Braylon Hans, Justin Heimes and Andrew Haberman also had 3-pointers.

Randolph got a solid game from Adrian Samano, who worked the glass and finished with 16 points. Logan Lienemann also hit double figures with his 14-point effort.

The two teams traded baskets in the opening quarter. Randolph got five points from Logan Lienemann, four points from Adrian Samano and a trey by Ryan Engel to give them the 15-13 first quarter lead. Wynot hung close, with treys by Kotner Koch and one by Devin Brummer.

In the second quarter, Wynot’s defense stiffened, holding the Cards to just seven points. Devin Brummer rained in four 3-pointer, and Kotner Koch hit his third trey of the night, as Wynot went on a 19-7 run to lead 32-22.

Wynot’s defense clamped down in the third quarter, holding the Cardinals to a single basket while they went on a 17-point run. Devin Brummer hit two more threes and Andrew Haberman had a pair of lay-ins as Wynot grew their lead to 49-24 going into the final period.

Wynot sent their reserves in for most of the final quarter. Nixon Heimes, Braylon Hans and Andrew Haberman all hit 3-pointers. Randolph tried to rally behind nine points each from Logan Lienemann and Adrian Samano, but it was a case of too little too late, as the Blue Devils advanced with the 60-49 win.

In Wynot’s first round game of the Lewis and Clark tournament, the Blue Devils would use a big second half run to down the Bloomfield Bees by a final of 56-33, and advance to play Randolph in the next round.

Wynot had a balanced attack led by Killian Steinhaus who hit a trio of 3-pointers on his way to 11 points. Justin Heimes also hit double figures with 10 points and Devin Brummer connected for eight points.

Bloomfield was led by Benjamin Dodge who tied for top scorer for the game with his 11 points. Jacob Smith also hit for double figures for the Bees with his 10 points.

Both teams would struggle to find the basket in the first half. In the first quarter, Bloomfield got a basket each from Beau Eisenhauer, Keldon Loecker and Benjamin Dodge. Wynot did a little better getting 3-pointers from Killian Steinhaus and Devin Brummer to take a 9-6 early lead.

In the second quarter, both teams would score nine points. Wynot got a pair of baskets from Justin Heimes and one by Andrew Haberman, plus some free throws. The Bees matched the totals with a pair of buckets by Jacob Smith and one by Keaton Gilsdorf and some charity tosses. Wynot held a 18-15 halftime lead.

It was bombs away for the Blue Devils as they would rain in five 3-pointers. Two by Killian Steinhaus and one each from Devin Brummer, Kasen Koch and Justin Heimes. Kasen Koch got five points, as well from the low post position. Bloomfield tried to keep up with five points from Jacob Smith and a basket each from Beau Eisenhauer, Keldon Loecker and Benjamin Dodge, but the 25-11 run by Wynot had increased their lead to 43-26.

Benjamin Dodge continued to work the offensive glass for five more points for the Bees in the fourth quarter. Wynot however, got their fast break going to the tune of a 14-7 run in the quarter. Carter Hans led the charge with five points and Killian Steinhaus, Devin Brummer and Cooper Oligmueller all hit from the field as Wynot advanced with the 56-33 win.
