1925: Simple process of selecting an Assessor has become complicated

Feb. 5, 1925

HARTINGTON- Political mixups that would perplex the mythical Philadelphia lawyer who is supposed to be able to straighten out the most intricate problems, seem to have a way of bubbling up in Cedar County in a manner most confusing, particularly to the chaps who think they have the stage all set, only to realize that something happened and the nice fat plum escaped.

The latest tangle was staged a few days ago in the office of County Assessor Alva Forinash in the matter of the city assessorship of Hartington.

R.V. Fletcher was elected last fall on the Democratic ticket and was smiling the smile of the successful candidate, Dame Rumor has it, several good friends and others slipped the information that the job was a joke, entailing several times as much labor as the income justified.

So, Mr. Fletcher failed to file his bond or to qualify.

Then County Assessor Forinash began to cast his eyes about for a citizen, good and true, upon whom he might wish the job and the foxy old dame is the authority for the statement that he had picked upon former county assessor H.J. Edwards, but on this point, Mr. Forinash is non-committal.

Expressing surprise at so much fuss over such a small job, Henry Hoese, who has already served on this particular job since about the time of the landing of Columbus, secured a bond and tendered it to County Judge Bryant.

Judge Bryant endeavored to dissuade him from filing it, but Henry insisted and the bond became a matter of record, and Henry’s name appears on the list of assessors scheduled to make the assessment this spring.

Friends of County Assessor Forinash intimate that the law limits the number of terms a person may serve as assessor, but, thus far, peace reigns with Henry smiling broadly.
