HARTINGTON — Hartington-Newcastle held on for a thrilling 60-56 win over Winnebago which took an extra session here on the hardwood Jan. 30.
The win came after dropping a 67-51 contest to Plainview on the road Jan. 28 to move to 7-10 on the season.
The Winnebago game was knotted at 50-50 at the end of regulation and the ‘Cats outscored the Indians, 10-6 in the extra four minutes for the win.
The teams were tied 9-9 at the end of the first quarter before HNS grabbed a tenuous 19-16 lead at the halftime break.
Winnebago nibbled back in the third which ended with the ‘Cats clinging to a onepoint lead and one more nibble by the Indians in the final frame and the teams were headed for overtime.
Brayden Lammers, who has really come on inside for HNS, especially the last half of the season, and is averaging a double-double at 12.3 points and 10 rebounds per game, led three Cats in double figures with 14 points. Naturally he put up a double, pulling down 15 rebounds. He also dished out four assists on the night and had a couple of blocks.
Cole Rosener added 13 and Austin Sudbeck tossed in a dozen.
In the loss to the Pirates, Plainview outscored the ‘Cats at every stop until the last one after the game was basically in hand.
HNS trailed by five after one, 14 at the break and 17 after three. The Wildcats trimmed a point off the margin in the final eight minutes but it was too little, too late.
Ayden Rosener did some work inside for the ‘Cats and wound up with 12 points. Lammers had another double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds, Austin Sudbeck tossed in eight points and Will Feilmeier came off the bench to contribute six points.
Hartington-Newcatle was set to open the GNAC Tournament Feb. 4 at West Holt against Elkhorn Valley.
The finals are set for Feb. 8 in the Hartington- Newcastle gym.
