PLAINVIEW - The Cedar Catholic boys wrestling team wrestled its way to the runnerup spot here at the Plainview Invitational Feb. 1, falling short of hosts by 1.5 points, 210-208.5.
The Lady Trojans traveled to Norfolk the same day to compete in the Norfolk Catholic Invitational and came home with a gold and a bronze for their day’s work.
Randolph, a distant third at Plainview with 141.5 points, Creighton fourth with 117 and Osmond/Wausa fifth with 104.
The Trojans earned championship medals from Braeden Kleinschmit (35-0) at 132, Bodie Hochstein (24-2) at 138, Easton Hochstein (400) at 144 and Brady Hochstein (38-0) at 165.
Maverick Heine and Brody Kleinschmit each brought home silver medals. Heine lost a tough, 4-1 decision in his finals bout to Uriel “Cookie” Guzman, an undefeated wrestler from Palmer. Kleinschmit and teammate, Hunter Kuchta placed second and third at 150 pounds with Kleinschmit edging out Kuchta 6-2 in the semifinals.
Joining Kuchta with a third-place showing in the event 106-pounder, Grady Lammers who went 2-2 in the round-robin weight class, winning one match by pin and the other by major decision to gather in extra team points.
Ty Opfer at 157, Castin Pinkelman at 175 and Kyptin Collier at 190 all earned fourth-place medals.
At the Norfolk Catholic Girls Invitational, Battle Creek won the team championship with 153 points, Summerland second with 88.5 and Cedar Catholic’s pair of wrestlers scored enough team points to take seventh with 28.5 points.
Freshman Evelyn Freeman, the 110-pound champion, won her only two matches by technical fall (18-0) with the match stopping at the 2:52-mark and by fall in a minute even.
Freeman improved to 24-2 on the season. Morgan Kuchta placed third going 3-1 on the day and improving her season record to 19-18.
The Lady Trojans will begin their post season with district Feb. 7 and Feb. 8.
The Trojans are slated to wrestle at the Clarkson/Leigh Invitational on Feb. 7.
