Cardinals hit dry spell on basketball court

Boys drop two games last week

RANDOLPH - The Randolph Cardinals have hit a bit of a dry spell as far as wins are concerned on the basketball court.

The Cards dropped a game on the road at Bloomfield on Jan. 21 where they fell, 54-40 then headed over to Winnebago on Jan. 24, dropping that game 58-38.

Against the Indians, the Cards got out early and took a 12-10 lead at the end of the first eight minutes.

“We came out hot, but kind of cooled down,” said Coach Cory Simpson. “It was a great atmosphere, they love their basketball there in Winnebago and it showed.”

Winnebago evened the score during the second quarter and jumped ahead later in the frame to take a 26-21 lead into the halftime locker room.

The Redbirds went cold in the third quarter, scoring only three points and the Indians put up 14 to take a fairly comfortable 40-24 advantage into the final period.

The Cards fell four points short in the final frame and the score settled at the 58-38 final.

Ryan Engel paced the Randolph offense with a dozen points on the night. Luke Harder tossed in nine and Logan Lienemann added eight.

The Cardinals had a bad second quarter when they headed north to take on Bloomfield.

After the Cards grabbed a 14-8 lead in the first stanza, the Bees responded with a 16-2 second quarter to head to the break with a 24-16 lead.

Randolph trimmed the lead down in the third to just three points by the end of the period, but Bloomfield responded again with a 23-points final eight minutes to send the Cardinals home with a loss.

Adrian Samano had the hot hand for the Cards, putting up 12 points. Lienemann and Lucas Bartels tacked on eight each, and Dayton Winkelbauer and Engel each contributed six.

Randolph was set to take on Wynot Jan. 28 before setting sail in the Lewis &Clark Conference Tournament Feb. 2.
