Wildcats post 2-1 mark for the week

HARTINGTON - Hartington- Newcastle used an inspiring fourth-quarter rally to turn away Crofton here Jan. 24, 55-48.

Earlier in the week, the Wildcats were defeated by Laurel-Concord-Coleridge 5643 and as was reported in last week’s, Cedar County News, they defeated Neligh-Oakdale 68-11.

The ‘Cats trailed by 10 in the final eight minutes before catching fire and overtaking the Warriors to come away with the seven-point win.

“It was a great come from behind win for us,” HNS coach Tylor Fincher said. “It was great to see us come together and get a lot of touches in the paint, Brayden Lammers continues to make and impact on both ends of the floor.”

Hartington-Newcastle had 32 points in the paint compared to 18 for Crofton and as for Lammers, he put in a huge night with 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field, pulled down 10 rebounds, swatted four blocks and swiped three steals. Not a bad night’s work.

Crofton led most of the way up until the fourth quarter. A session that saw the Wildcats outscore the Warriors 27-9 to erase a 39-28 deficit heading into the final frame.

Cole Heimes added 14 points, Ashton Wakeley had nine points and Carter Kelly tossed in seven.

Ayden Rosener yanked down seven boards, Wakeley and Kelly each had five. Cole Rosener handed out five assists.

In the LCC game, the Bears sprinted out to a 7-0 lead to open the contest, but the ‘Cats battled back scoring nine of the next 12 points to get to within a single point, 10-9.

Lammers got his team on the board hitting 1-of-2 free throws then Cole Heimes drained a three. After the Bears answered with a three, Lammers scored inside then cashed in on a traditional three-pointplay for the ‘Cats.

The game remained a three to four-point game until just before the half when another Lammers bucket inside and an Austin Sudbeck drive through the paint cut the LCC lead to two.

Back-to-back baskets, a Fincher timeout and a trifecta by the Bears and the Wildcats went to the locker room trailing by nine 32-23.

By the end of the third, the lead was up to 15 and the outcome was decided.

Lammers finished the night with 25 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for another double-double.

Hartington-Newcastle got in front of Neligh-Oakdale back on Jan. 20 and never really looked back on the way to the big win.

Lammers led the Wildcats with a dozen points and 14 players scored for HNS on the night.

The Wildcats were ready to take on Plainview on the road, Jan. 28 before hosting Winnebago on Jan. 30.

The GNAC Tournament is slated to get underway from Feb. 3-8.
