LAUREL — Laurel-Concord-Coleridge senior Gibson Roberts hit a career milestone on his way to helping the Bears earn a 10-point win over Walthill last week.
Roberts poured in 29 points on the night, reaching 1,000 career points along the way, to lead LCC to the 57-47 road win over the Blue Jays.
He was the only Bear in doublefigures on the night.
To say the Laurel-Concord-Coleridge Bears basketball season has been full of peaks and valleys this season is an understatement.
The Bears were up in the clouds as they opened the season 4-0 then hit rock bottom with a nine-game losing streak before taking on Walthill Jan. 17 on the road and at least temporarily righting the ship with a 57-47 win over the Bluejays.
A huge second quarter paced the Bears over the Bluejays.
After the first eight minutes ended with Walthill in front, 12-9, LCC exploded for 27 points in the second frame and held the Bluejays to just four points to head to the halftime break with the Bears in the lead, 36-16.
Walthill trimmed a basket off of the advantage in the third period but the Bears held on in the final stanza to post the 10-point victory.
Besides Roberts’ 29-point effort, Cade Johnson tacked on seven and Eli Haisch made a pair of 3-pointers. Johnson grabbed seven missed shots, Conner Korth pulled down five.
Roberts added five assists and three steals to his line during the game.
Highly regarded Wayne came to town to take on Laurel-Concord-Coleridge Tuesday.
Take into account the Blue Devils’ 11-1 record at the time, the fact they won the Northeast Nebraska Shootout last month and they had won three straight since losing their first game of the season to Douglas County West back on Jan. 4 and it was obvious Wayne’s credentials were legitimate.
The game was defensive from the opening tip, but the Blue Devils did it better on this night, turning away LCC by the 53-26 final score.
Haisch led a struggling Bear offense with six points. Tanner Thompson had five and Roberts and Johnson had four apiece.
Laurel-Concord-Coleridge was set to host Hartington-Newcastle on Jan. 21 to open three consecutive games at home.
Battle Creek will come to Laurel on Jan. 23 with Lutheran High Northeast to follow on Jan. 28.
