HARTINGTON — Demolition of the old high school on campus was postponed Wednesday night when the Hartington Board of Education tabled action on bids to tear down the building.
After hearing objections to the proposed demolition of the building from Hartington businessman, John Stockwell, board members voted to hold the five bids received from contractors pending the outcome of discussions on revitalizing the building.
Stockwell said he felt it would “be a disgrace to spend $11,000 to tear the building down.” “That building is as solid as a rock,” Stockwell told the board. “In prime condition it would cost a half million dollars to build, you haven’t given me a good reason for tearing it down.”
Supt. Donald Flakus told Stockwell the board’s primary concern is the deteriorating condition of the building.
He said many of the windows have been broken out and that there has been vandalism inside the structure.
