Cedar girls pick up a pair of wins

HARTINGTON - It took an extra session to win the final game of last week as the Cedar Catholic Lady Trojans improved to 9-4 on the season with a win over Pierce 49-48 here at the Monsignor Werner Activities Center on Jan. 17 and a 52-34 win at Wynot on Jan. 14.

The Lady Bluejays rolled into Hartington with a fairly impressive 10-3 record which included a third-place finish in the Great Northeast Nebraska Shootout last month in Wayne.

It took overtime, but the Lady Trojans turned away their Mid State Conference opponent in a defensive battle that hit the end of regulation tied, 42-42.

Cedar Catholic spotted the Lady Bluejays seven points in the opening eight minutes, but got the deficit down to a single point by the intermission.

Both defenses showed up after the break with the Lady Trojans posting just four points in the third frame, but only allowing Pierce five to head into the final stanza with the Lady Bluejays up by a bucket, 29-27.

Cedar Catholic got the bucket back in the fourth, outscoring Pierce 15-13 to force the extra four-minute period.

Addison Walter set the pace for Cedar Catholic with 15 points, including four 3-pointers. Anisten Wortmann tossed in 12 while Lauren Bernecker and Katelyn Arens each chipped in nine.

Arens hauled down eight rebounds, Wortmann grabbed seven missed shots.

Bailey Hochstein had three steals, Wortmann had three steals and dished out three assists.

A big third quarter made the difference in the game with Wynot.

The Lady Blue Devils are hard to beat every year and the task is harder at their house.

The teams finished the first quarter tied 8-8 before the Lady Trojans managed a 19-16 advantage heading into the halftime locker room.

Cedar Catholic came out in the third and scored 24 points in the period and claimed a 43-29 lead at the third-quarter break.

The Lady Trojans would add four points to the lead in the final eight minutes and the 52-34 final was set.

Bernecker used a 4-for-4 performance from beyond the arc to post a teamhigh 16 points on the evening. Wortmann was right on her heels with 14 and Arens had her normal solid performance with nine.

Wortmann made it a double-double with 10 rebounds to add to her points and she handed out four assists.

Cedar Catholic was set to host O’Neill St. Mary’s on Jan. 21 and hit the road to take on Wayne Jan. 24 in Mid State play.

The Lady Trojans continue on the road in conference action at West Point to take on Guardian Angels Central Catholic on Jan. 25 before returning home to take on Ponca on Jan. 28.
