WINNEBAGO — With identical 6-5 records the game on Friday night shaped up to be a real dogfight between the Winnebago Indians and the visiting Wynot Blue Devils.
This one went down to the wire as a last-second three-pointer by the Indians Adrian LaPointe allowed Winnebago to escape with the 59-56 win.
This game featured scoring runs and scoring droughts by both teams.
Winnebago got off to a fast start but the Blue Devils rallied in the second half before LaPointe’s heroics with just three seconds left sealed the win for Winnebago.
Wynot had a very balanced attack led by Devin Brummer who hit four three-pointers to take scoring honors for the Blue Devils with 12 points.
Andrew Haberman had a steady game with his 11 points and both Killian Steinhaus and Kasen Koch finished with 10 points each.
Winnebago shot well from three point land led by Lavelle Smith who hit three from long distance and finished with 13 points. Adrian LaPointe got all of his 12 points from behind the arc and Kellen Medina connected twice from long range on his way to nine points.
The Indians came out on fire offensively. A pair of three pointers each by Adrian LaPointe and Lavelle Smith and seven points by Kellen Medina allowed the Indians to race to a 25-15 first-quarter lead. Wynot got four points from Kasen Koch, a three-pointer by Devin Brummer and a basket each by Killian Steinhaus, Andrew Haberman and Justin Heimes accounting for the Blue Devils’ offense.
In the second quarter Wynot’s defense started to tighten up. Winnebago got six points from Faron Kearnes and some free throws.
The Blue Devils got production from a team effort led by six points from Killian Steinhaus, a field goal each from Justin Heimes, Andrew Haberman, Kotner Koch, Kasen Koch and Carter Hans as they got back into the game trailing 35-31 at halftime.
The third quarter was pretty much a toss up.
Wynot was led by Andrew Haberman’s six points and a second trey by Devin Brummer. Winnebago got a three-pointer each from Lavelle Smith and Rabikim Free Bass to hold on to the 48-42 lead going into the final period.
In fourth quarter action, Wynot would narrow the gap with two more three pointers from Devin Brummer, a trey by Cooper Oligmueller and a basket each from Killian Steinhaus and Kasen Koch as they tied the game with just 13 seconds left.
Winnebago kept pace with threes from Kellen Medina and Rabikim Free Bass and with three seconds left a long three pointer from the right wing by Adrian LaPointe let the Indians escape with the 59-56 win.
