Lady Cards fall twice

RANDOLPH - The Lady Cardinal basketball team dropped a pair of Lewis & Clark Conference games here Jan. 7 and Jan. 9 to the Walthill Lady Blujays 59-15 and the Winside Lady Wildcats 63-16 to fall to 0-11 on the season.

The Lady Wildcats came to town Jan. 7 and turned away Randolph for Winside’s third win of the season.

“They played solid man to man defense and shot lights out the first quarter,” said Coach Jordyn Anderson. “We drove the lane and got to the foul line, but they eventually shut that down and forced us to shoot mid-range and longer field goals. Plain and simple, our shots were just not falling.”

Kynlee Winkelbauer was the main offensive threat for the Lady Cards, finishing the game with six points while also grabbing 10 rebounds.

Lilly Kuchta and Abbey Backer each tacked on four points while Brooke Meier added two.

Braylee Kelley pulled down six missed shots and Kuchta swiped five steals.

The Lady Blujays left little doubt in the game’s outcome by sprinting to a 28-2 lead after the opening session of the game.

“Walthill played a very strong 3-2 defense which we penetrated by driving to the basket,” Anderson said. “We just had trouble making shots and it seemed like they hardly missed. They moved the ball well and capitalized on finding the open person.”

Kuchta was the leading scorer for Randolph on the evening with six points. Meier added four. Winkelbauer contributed three and Delayne Thelen banked a couple free throws.

Winkelbauer and Kelley hauled in eight and six boards respectively and Kelley dished out three assists.

Kuchta paced the Lady Cards’ defense with six steals, Backer had four and Kelley recorded three.

Randolph was set to take on Niobrara/ Verdigre Jan. 14 on the road before heading to Homer on Jan. 16 for another conference tilt.

The Lady Cardinals will continue a busy week with a trip to Wausa on Jan. 17 and another road game at Bloomfield on Jan. 21.
