HARTINGTON - Despite missing all 10 of its 3-point attempts on the night, the Cedar Catholic girls basketball team turned away Laurel-Concord-Coleridge 52-37 here at the Monsignor-Werner Activities Center on Jan. 9 to improve to 7-4 on the season.
“We had some tempo issues throughout the game which effected the score,” said Cedar Catholic coach, Craig Wortmann. “Now we just need to fine tune some things and figure some things out moving forward. Tightening down our defense and getting out on offense are things we need to get better at doing and deciding when to get out and when not to get out on offense.”
Anisten Wortmann started the scoring for the Lady Trojans with a bucket and the LCC offense answered to tie the score 2-2.
Addison Walter, who would end up with 12 points, scored with a drive along the baseline to make it 4-2.
Wortmann stole the ball from the Lady Bears and took it in for a lay up to make it 6-2 and when the quarter ended, Cedar Catholic led 12-5.
The lead was eight at the break and at five heading into the final frame.
The defense responded in the final period, holding LCC to six points while the offense put up 16 to arrive at the 15-point victory.
Katelyn Arens had a great game inside for the Lady Trojans, putting in a team-high 15 points on 6-for-10 shooting from the field. She also pulled down eight rebounds on the evening, dished out four assists and swiped a couple of steals.
Bailey Hochstein tossed in nine points and had six boards while Wortmann had four steals to lead Cedar Catholic in that department.
“We just need to keep working on what we’re doing and do what we are capable of doing without doing too much,” the coach said. “We’ll keep building as the season goes on and work to get better each day.”
The Lady Trojans were scheduled to take on Wynot on the road Jan. 14 before hosting Pierce on Jan. 17 back here at the Werner Activities Center and hosting O’Neill St. Mary’s on Jan. 21.
