State-rated Pender hands Blue Devils a defeat

WYNOT — The Wynot Blue Devils hosted the 10-1 Pender Pendragons Friday and went down to defeat, 57-46.

The Blue Devils battled hard for the entire game but just couldn’t get over the hump as their record fell to 5-5 with the loss.

Wynot got double figure scoring from Killian Steinhaus with 13 points and Andrew Haberman with 10 points. Pender was led by Trevor Trimble who hit a trio of threes and finished with 15 points. Alex Roth worked the inside for 15 points as well and Zander Welsh just missed double figures with a nine point effort for the Pendragons.

The two teams would battle pretty evenly in the early going. Wynot got five points from Killian Steinhaus and a trey by Kasen Koch in the first quarter. Pender countered with six points from Aex Roth and a pair of buckets off the bench from Xander Welsh as they opened with a 13-9 first quarter advantage.

Roth and Welsh continued to find scoring opportunities in the second quarter scoring five points each. Wynot got a pair of threes from Devin Brummer and a basket from Killian Steinhaus but they had fallen behind 29-21 at halftime.

In the third quarter Wynot would try and rally behind six points each from Kasen Koch, Andrew Haberman and Killian Steinhaus. Pender would stretch their lead behind nine big points from Trevor Trimble and a basket each from Ryan Kruger and Owen Kniefl to earn a 46-35 lead going into the final quarter.

Wynot would stage a comeback early in the fourth quarter. Andrew Haberman hit for five points and Kotner Koch worked the paint for four points as the Blue Devils would cut the Pendragons lead to six points with three minutes left in the game.

The Pendragons would not fold as they got a pair of three pointers from Trevor Trimble and a basket each from Aex Roth and Owen Kniefl to thwart any comeback as Pender improved to 11-1 with the 57-46 win.
