Jan. 6, 2010 HARTINGTON — Cedar-Knox Public Power customers can expect to see a jump in electric bills in 2010.

The Cedar-Knox Board has approved a 4.95 percent rate increase effective Jan. 1, 2010.

“We take rate increases very seriously and try to do what we can to mitigate them,” said Manager Dan Leise.

Leise said CKPPD has worked hard to keep its costs down, but this increase is simply unavoidable.

“Over the last two years we have reduced staff by two positions through attrition, refinanced the small amount of debt we carry and also successfully applied for government funds for several reliability projects involving major feeder lines.”

The rate increases from the past few years have been mostly to cover the increase in the cost of power the District purchases to distribute to its customers, Leise said.

Nebraska Public Power (NPPD) generates and supplies power to the Cedar-Knox Public Power District, which in turn distributes it to their customers through 2,000 miles of power lines, 16 substations and roughly 7,000 meters.

The power is purchased under a 20-year contract that will run through the year 2022.

COLERIDGE — Coleridge School Board members voted to retain the same officers for 2010.

Robert Colwell will continue to serve as board president — this will be Colwell’s third year as president. Board members voted for Karla Hansen as vice-president and Betty Jo Leapley to continue as secretary.

The Board also gave their approval Monday on an inter-local agreement with the Elgin Public School District. A student from Elgin is enrolled in the Level III program at Coleridge.

A decision on co-op agreements for sports and other school activities was tabled until February.

Coleridge and Laurel schools are currently involved in a co-op with wrestling, boys golf, and cross-country. The decision has already been made to co-op in football next year.

Consideration for a co-op with Laurel will be given for volleyball, girls and boys basketball, track, play productions, speech and music.

“If things change, we can always get out of the co-op,” Head Administrator Craig Frerichs said.

Coleridge High School currently has an enrollment of 42 students. The senior class is the biggest class with 15.
