It all adds up to be an interesting read

A Closer Look

We refer to this annual issue of the Cedar County News as our annual numbers issue.

With school on a two-week hiatus and most governmntal meetings on hold for the Holidays, there just isn’t a lot of news out there to report this time of year. That’s why we started our annual numbers issue — a review of the weather here in 2024 and a look at the population of area towns and Cedar County as a whole. It’s not a lot of fun to put together, but it sure does make for some interesting reading once all the numbers come together. If only my old high school math instructors could see me ciphering away on this section each year, they’d probably die laughing.

You see, math was never my strong suit. Oh sure, I could add and subtract with the best of them. But division, fractions and formulas, oh boy, that’s a whole different story. I’m getting a cold sweat just thinking of them. Getting through high school math was tough enough, but college math, well, that’s a story problem that would befuddle even the best mathematician.

So, yes, putting all these numbers on paper is a laborious task, but it’s a great way to look back at the year.

Do you remember that hot stretch we had in late July? Oh, that was a sticky one. How about the January cold snap, when the thermometer practically lived below zero. Those January days were 18 degrees, no 19, well maybe 20 degrees colder than the average winter low temperature here. No, wait I mean 26 degrees colder than normal, I think. Well, you get the point. It was cold. And, what better way to enjoy a cold evening at home, than reading your Cedar County News.

And as a new cold stretch begins here this year, I hope our readers take time to look over the numbers from last year. Oh, and one more thing. Please ignore any math errors you might come across. After all, math is the whole reason I became a writer. I get along a lot better with words than numbers.
