WINNEBAGO - The Cedar Catholic Lady Trojan wrestling team traveled to Winnebago Jan. 3 to compete in the Winnebago Lady Indian Wrestling Invitational.
Coach Justin Bartling has two wrestlers on this year’s team and they both competed here in the 38team invitational, one of the biggest around.
Teams from as far away as Hemingford, Valentine, O’Neill, Todd County (SD) and Harrisburg (SD) converged to compete on the five-mat invitational.
Norfolk won the team title with 193.5 points, Yutan was second with 151, Omaha North was third at 124 and Battle Creek and Bonne Homme/Scotland/Avon (SD) were tied for fourth.
The Lady Trojans ended up 26th in the team race with 20 points. Cedar Catholic was right between O’Neill which was 25th with 25 points and Valentine which was 27th with 19.
Both Lady Trojans scored in the tournament, led by 110-pounder Evelyn Freeman, who scored 17 team points while placing fifth.
Morgan Kuchta, who wrestled at 135 pounds did not place, but scored three points for the team after winning by fall in the third round of her weight class.
Freeman opened her tournament with a pin , then was pinned then parlayed two pins and a medical forfeit into her fifth-place medal.
Kuchta received a bye to open the tournament then was pinned in the second period. She then pinned an opponent right at the final buzzer before losing in the wrestlebacks by fall.
The Lady Trojans are scheduled to wrestle at Winside in an invitational on Jan. 10.
The Trojan wrestling team was scheduled to wrestle in a triangular at Guardian Angels Central Catholic in West Point with the Bluejays and Randolph on Jan. 7 before heading to David City for the Aquinas Invitational on Jan. 10.

135 - Morgan Kuchta; Was defeated by Laila Ceivas (Norfolk) by fall, 2:46; Defeated Mariah Ham (Norfolk) by fall, 6:00; Was defeated by Kruze Leichleiter (Tekamah-Herrman) by fall, 4:28.
