WAYNE - Cedar Catholic won the fifth-place game of the Great Northeast Nebraska Shootout here Dec. 30, 61-47, over Plattsmouth then opened the new year on the road at McCook Lake, SD where the Lady Trojans were defeated, 60-51 on Jan. 3.
In the trip across the Missouri River, Dakota Valley sprinted to an early lead of 21-4 at the end of the first quarter and the Lady Trojans spent the rest of the game trying to get back in it.
The Lady Panthers kept Cedar Catholic at bay through the second and third quarters before the Lady Trojans came to life in the final frame.
Unfortunately, the damage had been done and Cedar Catholic fell by nine points.
Addison Walter paced Cedar Catholic with 16 points on the night, Annisten Wortmann and Lauren Bernecker each added nine and Katelyn Arens chipped in eight.
Savannah Pick and Walter each pulled down seven missed shots, Wortmann handed out three assists and Bernecker had three steals.
In the fifth-place game at Wayne, the Lady Trojans jumped out to a 16-10 lead after the first quarter and extended it to 34-19 by the halftime buzzer.
Plattsmouth dipped into the lead in the third period, but a 14-10 final frame earned Cedar Catholic its sixth win of the season.
Walter led the Lady Trojans again, this time with 20 points, Wortmann had 15, Bernecker 10 and Arens scored nine. Walter completed the double-double with a dozen rebounds.
Bernecker dished out four assists and had five steals.
Cedar Catholic will host Laurel-Concord-Coleridge on Jan. 9 at the Werner Activities Center before traveling to Wynot for a date with the Lady Blue Devils on Jan. 14.
