Rasmussen sets new school record
WAYNE — The Laurel-Concord-Coleridge Lady Bears split their opening games in the Elkhorn Valley Bank Great Northeast Nebraska Shootout Holiday Basketball Tournament here Dec. 27 and 28 at Rice Auditorium at Wayne State College.
The Lady Bears turned away Plattsmouth in the opening round 66-58 before dropping a semifinal game to Wayne, 48-35 to wind up in the third-place game on Dec. 30.
In the opening game, Lady Bear sophomore, Rena Rasmussen went off for 39 points, which set a new LCC school record.
In the loss to the Lady Blue Devils in the semifinals, both teams started a little sluggish in the first half.
After Wayne took an 11-10 lead into the second quarter, the Lady Blue Devils increased the advantage to 20-16 at the intermission.
Wayne added to the lead by four in the third and another five in the final eight minutes to hand LCC its third loss of the season.
Kaida Eriksen had the hot hand in the game with 12 points, Lainey Schutte added nine, Carlie Kvols eight and Hattie McCorkindale had five.
Rasmussen, who was coming off her career high the day before, was held to a single free throw in the game.
She did grab eight rebounds in the contest, McCorkindale and Schutte each hauled down five and Kvols collected four missed shots.
Eriksen handed out three assists while Camryn Sohler and Schutte had two steals each.
In the first round, the Lady Bears jumped out to a 17-10 lead at the end of the first frame.
The Lady Blue Devils nibbled into the lead by the intermission, but exploded for 32 points in the third quarter to send the teams to the fourth with the lead, 54-46.
Laurel-Concord-Coleridge righted the ship, outscoring Plattsmouth 20-4 in the final eight minutes to advance to the semifinals of the tournament.
Eriksen and Schutte helped boost Rasmussen’s career day with nine and eight points respectively, Kvols chipped in with five.
Rasmussen completed a double-double by pulling down 11 rebounds in the game, Eriksen added six and Schutte had five.
After taking on Pierce in the third-place game of the Shootout, The Bears will travel to Fremont on Jan. 3 to take on Archbishop Bergan then host Elkhorn Valley on Jan. 7.
