Hartington-Newcastle leads switch to new conferences

Jan. 17, 2024

HARTINGTON - The Hartington-Newcastle School Board voted to leave the Lewis and Clark Conference and form a new conference.

It may be an era of bigger is better in college sports, but that’s just not the case on the high school level, HNS Supt. A.J. Johnson said.

“The one thing we are most in agreement on is we only want eight members,” Johnson said.

The Laurel-Concord-Coleridge School Board has already voted to also leave the Lewis and Clark Conference and join HNS in the new league.

Plainview, Summerland, Elkhorn Valley, Atkinson-West Holt, Neligh-Oakdale and Lutheran High Northeast are all expected to join Jan. 17, 2024

HARTINGTON - Hartington residents and business owners can expect an increase in garbage rates in 2024.

The Hartington City Council discussed the rising expenses for collecting garbage and the need to defray those costs at its Jan. 11 meeting. The meeting was originally slated for Jan. 8, but had to be postponed twice because of last week’s winter storms.

Hartington Mayor Mark Becker said wages, insurance and the landill fee have all gone up.

The city is also purchasing a new garbage truck. That expense is another factor in the rate decision.

Becker proposed a rate increase of about 10 percent. The Council agreed to look at its expenses and then put together a resolution for a rate increase.

Jessica Schmit was unanimously appointed as the new county clerk Jan. 9 during the board of commissioners’ first meeting of 2024.

Longtime County Clerk Dave Dowling decided to retire from his position as 2024 began.

Schmit, who was hired in August to work for the county clerk’s office, will finish the current four-year term, which runs through December 2026.

HARTINGTON - Area residents will be able to voice their opinions on the future of the historic Skylon.

Mayor Mark Becker said he plans a town hall meeting to discuss costs for the city to move the dance hall to a new location in the business park being developed between Bomgaars and Pomp’s Tire Service.

The city is also in need of a new utility shed. In order to pay for both, the Council is considering a bond, to be discussed at the meeting, and then voted on in the primary election.

Roger Wortmann said he wants to use the land to store equipment and inventory for his business. If it is not relocated, it would be torn down.

Besides moving the building, an addition could be built onto the front and back. Additional storage and new bathrooms also would be installed.
