NEWMAN GROVE - The Cedar Catholic wrestling team ended 2024 with a team championship in the Newman Grove/St. Edward Invitational on Dec. 29.
The Trojans parlayed five individual champs and a couple of second-place finishes into 207 team points which was 4.5 points in front of second-place Battle Creek, the returning Class C state team champion.
Wilber-Clatonia was a distant third with 157 points, Boone Central was fourth with 131 and the Norfolk JV squad rounded out the top five teams with 123.5.
Brady Hochstein had arguably the most impressive day, recording three pins on his was to the 165-pound gold medal.
Hochstein stuck his first opponent in just 22 seconds, had his longest match in the semifinals winning in 1:28 then took care of Landon Ferris of the Norfolk JV’s in 49 seconds.
Grady Lammers pinned his way to the top of the podium at 106, his last pin was over Braxton Wilson of Cedar Bluffs with just 11 seconds left in the match.
Easton Hochstein won the 144-pound championship with a pin, a technical fall and a decision while teammate Braeden Kleinschmit was the winner at 132 pounds with a technical fall, a pin and a major decision.
Brody Kleinschmit also wrestled his way to a title at 157.
Maverick Heine placed second after running into the returning state champion in Ryan Stusse. Jr. of Battle Creek in his finals match at 126 and Bodie Hochstein was second after taking a medical forfeit in the finals at 138.
Hunter Kuchta was fourth (150), Kyptin Collie (190) and Castin Pinkelman (175) were fifth and Kody Bartling (132) was sixth.
Cedar was set to open its 2025 portion of the schedule with the Lady Trojans headed for a tournament at Winnebago on Jan. 3 and the Trojans heading for a dual with GACC Jan. 7.
