75 Years Ago - Dec. 29, 1949 RANDOLPH – The unprecedented snows and blizzard which began in November of 1948 and continued unabated until in March grabbed the news spotlight in the Randolph locality for 1949, taking the three top stories of the ten big news stories for 1949.
This is the Times’ ninth presentation of the ten big news stories for the year just ending.
In direct contrast to some years, there was no doubt as to which stories would be the choice for the top spot or the three top spots. The blizzards and recurring ground blizzards and snow storms, which added more snow to the 15-inch fall received in November of 1948 caused the greatest tie-up of transportation facilities, travel on highways and disruption of communications in history of northeast Nebraska.
60 Years Ago - Dec. 24, 1964 RANDOLPH – Richard Huwaldt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Huwaldt, has been announced as the winner of a Regents Scholarship, by the University of Nebraska. He is a Randolph High School senior.
The Randolph school also had two alternate winners as result of the Regents examinations which were taken in November. Tom Truby, son of Mr. and Mrs. LaVern Truby, is first alternate and Jim Ehrhardt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Ehrhardt, is second alternate.
The Regents Scholarships are for tuition at the University of Nebraska and are worth $204.00. Alternate winners are eligible to receive scholarships that might be available should winners in other schools in the state decline to use them.
50 Years Ago - Dec. 26, 1974 RANDOLPH – City Clerk John Atwood submitted his resignation letter after 38 years of service. His retirement is effective January 1, 1975. *** RANDOLPH – Friday, December 20 was the annual induction ceremony of the National Honor Society’s new members. The existing members presented the program with Nancy Truby, president, welcoming the student body, parents and the members of the community. Nancy explained the qualifications required to become a member of the society. Lisa Kluver presented the qualifications for the area of Scholarship. Eileen Tunink pretend the qualifications for the area of Character. Rex Craven presented the area of Service and Tamera Korth presented the area of Leadership. Lexi Rohrberg introduced the new members and their parents while Holly Olberding, Cindy Tunink and Mary Ann Gubbels escorted the new members and their parents up to sign the induction register.
Nancy Truby administered the oath to the new members.
The members inducted this year are as follows: Lonnie Bermel, Jeanie Kruger, Ramona Brunssen, Karen Dwyer, Dan Greiner, Julie Gubbels, Mark Pedersen, Debbie Robinson, Marla Sellon, Kristi Tunink, Ryan Whitehorn.
40 Years Ago - Dec. 27, 1984 RANDOLPH – The Randolph High Cardettes ran their season record to 5-0 this past week as they moved past Coleridge by a score of 65-15 in a game played in the Randolph gym on Thursday night.
The Cardettes are scheduled to play in the Wayne State College Holiday Tournament on Wednesday afternoon, (December 26) at 2:30 when they will meet Decatur-Lyons in the opening round. The finals of the girls portion of the tournament will be played on Friday afternoon at 3:15 p.m. between the winners of the Randolph-Lions game and the Stanton-Winside game. The losers of the first round game will meet for consolation honors at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday afternoon.
In the win over Coleridge the Cardettes raced to a 19-2 first quarter lead and were never in trouble throughout the contest as Coach Dan List made liberal use of his bench. Coach List said that Coleridge was hampered by the absence of their top player. Coach List also said that his girls had an excellent game on both ends of the court as all 13 girls in uniforms saw extensive action. *** RANDOLPH – Winter was ushered into Randolph on Friday with light freezing rain that was preceded on Thursday by dense fog that covered a large portion of Nebraska.
Winter officially began on Friday at 10:23 a.m. when the sun appeared to be directly over the Tropic of Capricorn in the Southern Hemisphere, the furthest point of its apparent movement south. After Friday the sun will gradually appear to move north in the sky.
Cold and strong winds on Friday continued into the evening hours, but by Saturday morning the wind had subsided and the sun appeared, making the weather much more agreeable than a year ago when the winter chill factors reached an estimated -70 degrees.
30 Years Ago - Dec. 28, 1994 RANDOLPH – Lighting contest winners were judged this year by personal ballots and deposited at local business places. Those voting were eligible for winning a string of Christmas lights.
Winners will receive Randolph Script of $15 for first; $10 for second and $5 for third place.
Residential winners in the lighting contest for first were Mark and Marcia Gubbels. Bob and Velma Meyer earned second and Dr. Neil and Lesa Sheppard earned third place.
Placing in the rural division of the lighting contest were Merle and Jean Gerkins, first; Dean and Ruth Carstens, second, and Bill and Joan Gubbels, third. *** RANDOLPH – The first Randolph baby born to a Randolph couple in 1995 will be the recipient of many gifts donated by Randolph merchants and professional people. The contest is sponsored by the Randolph Woman’s Club.
The rules regarding the winners are simply that the baby be born to a legally married couple living in Randolph or the surrounding area, having either a Randolph phone number or mailing address.
20 Years Ago - Dec. 29, 2004 RANDOLPH – The Randolph community and surrounding area anxiously await the arrival of the first baby born to a Randolph couple in 2005.
This infant and his/her parents will be the recipients of many gifts donated by merchants and professional people in a portion sponsored by the Randolph Woman’s Club.

10 Years Ago - Dec. 31, 2014 PIERCE – The Pierce County Board of Commissioners met Monday, Dec. 22 ,for its last regular meeting of 2014.
Board Chairman Jim Maas will complete his term of office with the Jan. 5 meeting. The District 2 commissioner has served 12 years, but did not seek re-election in 2014. His successor, Brad Albers of Randolph, will be sworn in with all other county officials on Thursday, Jan. 8, at 9 a.m.
The agenda for the meeting was short as the result of a late cancellation.
