Cardinals place third at Wisner

WISNER - The Randolph Cardinal wrestling team placed third in the Wisner-Pilger Invitational Saturday after scoring 97.5 team points.

Neligh-Oakdale won the meet with 123 points; East Butler was second with 116 followed by the Cardinals.

Sixteen teams competed in the tournament and 10 Randolph wrestlers brought home hardware.

Bentley Reimers, who is undefeated on the season, brought home a gold medal at 106 pounds after adding five wins to his season record of 9-0.

Reimers breezed through his weight class with three pins, a technical fall and a major decision over Drake Sova of East Butler, 12-4 in the finals’ bout.

Justin Backer placed second at 175 and finished the day 3-1 to improve to 10-2 on the season. Josh Miller also placed fifth at 175 for the Cardinals, winning his fifthplace match by major decision over Stephan Stucar of Sandy Creek.

Gavin Wortman also was the runner-up at 190 pounds. Wortman made the finals in a thrilling ultimate tie breaker win over Wyatt Langhorst from Clarkson/Leigh then lost in his final match when he was beaten by Chase Thomas of Neligh-Oakdale by fall.

Cole Jensen (132), John Leija (150) and Gage Jensen all placed third for the Cardinals.

Jensen beat his teammate, Tate Brodersen by a decision of 9-5 to grab the bronze medal and send Brodersen home with the fourthplace hardware; Leija pinned Devon Prochaska of East Butler for third and Jensen pinned Valen Searight of Lutheran High Northeast for his third-place medal.

Talyn Meyer was fourth at 120 pounds and Owen Junck came in fifth.

The Cardinals will return to the mat at the Ord Dual Tournament Dec. 30 then head to West Point for a triangular with Guardian Angels Central Catholic and Cedar Catholic on Jan. 7.
