Bears drop a pair of games against tough foes

LAUREL — The Laurel-Concord-Coleridge Bears basketball team has hit a bit of a rough spot in the schedule as it finished up the portion of the schedule before the moratorium.

The Bears fell to Plainview on the road Dec. 20, 60-56, and lost a game to Ponca on the road, 50-35, on Dec. 17 to fall to 4-2 on the sea son after opening up with four straight wins.

LCC was cold from the field against the Pirates, according to head coach, Quin Conner.

“We shot absolutely terrible and missed open looks we had been making,” said the coach. “If we find a way to make two more shots, it’s a completely different game.”

Final statistics were not available for the game with Plainview at press time.

Laurel-Concord-Coleridge traveled to Ponca on Dec. 17 and ran into a typical Ponca defense, which makes it difficult to score the basketball.

The Bears were a chilly, 15-of-48 (31%) from the field including a 2-for-19 performance from beyond the 3-point line.

The Indians got out to a 14-9 lead after the first eight minutes, but LCC nibbled into the advantage by a basket before the intermission.

Ponca added three points to its lead at the end of the third stanza then put the game away in the final quarter, outscoring the Bears 18-9 to close out the 15-point win.

Gibson Roberts led the Laurel-Concord-Coleridge offensive attack with 21 points on the night. Cade Johnson added seven.

Johnson grabbed eight rebounds in the contest, Caleb Erwin and Roberts each handed out three assists.

The Bears will be off until the Wayne Holiday Tournament which opens Dec. 27 at Rice Auditorium on the campus of Wayne State College. LCC is set to take on Plattsmouth in the opening round of the tournament in the final game scheduled for 8:30 p.m.

Winnebago and Wayne are on the same side of the bracket. Pierce will take on South Sioux City on the other side of the bracket along with Cedar Catholic taking on Pender.

The tournament will continue through Dec. 30.
