LAUREL — The Laurel-Concord-Coleridge Lady Bear basketball team went into the five-day hiatus with a couple of wins over the past week to improve to 4-2 on the season.
The Lady Bears defeated fellow Greater Northeast Activities Conference member, Plainview 67-30 on Dec. 20 in a game played in Plainview and turned away Ponca on Dec. 17, 48-34.
Final statistics were not available for the Plainview contest at Laurel Advocate press deadline.
Against, the Lady Indians, the Lady Bears used a smothering defensive effort in the second quarter to get a leg up on Ponca, outscoring the opponent, 17-1 in the frame to grab an advantage after the opening eight minutes ended in a 6-6 tie.
LCC added a bucket to the lead in the third quarter, then held on for the 14-point win.
Kaida Eriksen and Rena Rasmussen paced the LCC offense with 16 and 15 points respectively, Camryn Sohler added eight while Carlie Kvols tacked on six.
Lainey Schutte hit double figures in rebounding with 14, Rasmussen completed a double-double by grabbing 11 missed shots on the night.
Schutte also dished out four assists, Eriksen had three. Kvols swiped four steals.
The Lady Bears are set to enter the Wayne Holiday Tournament at Rice Auditorium on the campus of Wayne State College.
Laurel-Concord-Coleridge will take on Plattsmouth in the opening round of the tournament on Dec. 27 at 7 p.m.
Winnebago and Wayne are on the same side of the bracket with Pierce taking on South Sioux City and Cedar Catholic lining up with Pender on the other side of the tournament.
The tournament continues through Dec. 30.
