1999: Sheriff Trautman turns in his resignation

HARTINGTON—Cedar County Sheriff Loren Trautman pleaded to no contest in Cedar County Court to criminal charges filed against him, and then promptly resigned from office. Trautman and his attorney, James Martin Davis, reached a plea bargain agreement with special prosecutor Clarence Mauch, Oakland, prior to hearing.

The hearing was called after a Cedar County News article outlined several areas where Trautman had acted recklessly or unprofessionally, including allowing an inmate to handle a gun.

HARTINGTON—Kyle Becker, 16, was pronounced dead after his vehicle was found in a ditch off of a county road two miles west and one-half mile north of Hartington in an early morning one-vehicle accident.

Becker was driving north on a county road when he apparently lost control of the vehicle and it slid into a bridge approach and then slid down a steep embankment next to the bridge.

PLAINVIEW—The Cedar Catholic Trojans picked up a pair of wins last week. Cedar defeated Madison, 6042, and topped Plainview, 67-51.

MADISON—The Lady Trojans split a pair of games last week. Cedar defeated Norfolk Catholic in a 53-51 overtime win and fell to Madison 47-35.
