Lady Bears earn a split for the week

LAUREL - The Laurel-Concord-Coleridge Lady Bears basketball team rebounded from a tough loss 60-57 to the Homer Lady Knights on Dec. 10 with a 68-44 win over Tri County Northeast here on Dec. 13.

The Lady Bears opened up a 10-point lead over the Wolfpack, ending the opening eight minutes with a 16-6 advantage then extended the lead to 3814 by the halftime huddle.

LCC extended the gap in the third frame by six points before coasting to the 24-point victory.

Rena Rasmussen had a great game for the Lady Bears, pouring in 25 points on the evening and completing a double-double by pulling down a dozen missed shots.

Kaida Eriksen added 15 points and Carlie Kvols chipped in with 13 and added five rebounds.

Rasmussen just missed a triple-double by recording eight steals in the contest, Lainey Schutte had six while Brynlee Stanley and Eriksen contributed three apiece.

LCC got out to a 6-2 lead over the Lady Knights after a 3-pointer from Camryn Sohler with just over two minutes gone in the game, but Homer got hot and sprinted to 11-6 lead of its own causing Lady Bears coach Marcus Messersmith to ask for a timeout with 3:40 left in the first frame.

His team responded with a 12-foot jumper by Stanley and a put back on an offensive rebound by Rasmussen to make it 11-10 with LCC trailing.

Another offensive rebound and score by Rasmussen late in the first evened the score at 20-20 then Homer canned a couple of free throws to close out the first.

A strong second quarter put the Lady Knights up by 10 over the intermission and it grew to 12 early in the second half.

The Lady Bears got the lead down to a bucket with around 3:30 left in the third after a Carlie Kvols 3 made it 39-37, but it ended up at seven heading into the final period.

Laurel-Concord-Coleridge would get back to within two when Rasmussen grabbed her own miss under the bucket and scored to make it 51-49 then again after another Kvols long ball made it 59-57 with 28.5 seconds left on the clock.

Homer converted 1-of-2 charity tosses with 24.1 second left, but the Lady Bears couldn’t get a shot off and a jump ball was called with 3.6 seconds on the clock with the possession arrow pointing at the Lady Knights.

They got the ball in bounds and the clock expired. Rasmussen led the way again with 19 points and had another doubledouble with 15 boards. Kvols and Eriksen each added 11 points and Lainey Schutte had eight rebounds and handed out five assists.

The Lady Bears were set to take on Ponca on Dec. 17 before opening play in the Greater Northeast Activities Conference with a regular season date with Plainview on Dec. 20 in Plainview.
