HARTINGTON — Snow removal was a hot topic at Monday’s Hartington City Council meeting.
Council members said residents may need to be reminded of the ordinances dealing with winter storms.
The city ordinance requires sidewalks be scooped within 48 hours after the snow stops.
Residents also need to understand that snow can not be piled by the dumpsters.
Tyler and Angie Peitz asked if the city would clean the snow out of the alley behind their house. The alley is located between Main and State Street.
City Council members will seek legal advice before making a decision on cleaning snow out of an alley after a major snow storm.
Cars cannot park in front of the Peitz residence, which is along Hwy. 57.
“If we do it for one person it sets a precedent, although I understand it is your only access,” said Councilman Tim Burbach.
“Considering this is the only way to their house – I don’t have a problem with it,” Councilman Gary Kruse said.
Council members agreed to open the alley if a major snow storm occurs between now and when the decision is made at the next board meeting on Jan. 11.
Council members briefly discussed if the alley should be put on the One and Six Year Street Plan.
Council members gave permission for the Chamber of Commerce to maintain their own web page on the city’s web site.

HARTINGTON — A two-vehicle car accident Dec. 8 sent five people to the hospital, and put a crimp in the printing plans of the Northeast Nebraska News Company’s papers.
A vehicle driven by Northeast Nebraska News Company employee Regina Lorenz was involved in the Tuesday morning accident with a vehicle owned by Dorothy Paulsen, Coleridge.
Northeast Nebraska News Company press operator Dale Lorenz was a passenger in the vehicle.
Regina Lorenz was treated at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, S.D. and released Tuesday afternoon.
Dale Lorenz spent two days in the hospital. He was released Thursday to recuperate at home from six broken ribs. Information on the occupants of the Paulsen vehicle was not available.
Blowing, drifting snow and poor visibility were factors in the accident, law enforcement officials said.
The Cedar County News, Randolph Times, Coleridge Blade, Osmond Republican, Wausa Gazette and Laurel Advocate were printed in an all-night marathon printing session Thursday.
