1999: Caseys is planning to expand its Hartington store

HARTINGTON—Dr. Charles Vlach, Hartington, and his associate, Dr. J. Carey Laporte, Jr., are announcing the merger of their offices with the Yankton Medical Clinic.

The merger is to be effective Jan. 1. Dr. Vlach’s Family Medicine Center will continue functioning very much the same as it has in the past.

HARTINGTON—A Hartington youth who wanted to experience a lifestyle unlike the Midwestern one she was accustomed to went East and is working as a live-in governess for three children.

Amy Steffen, a 1984 graduate of Cedar Catholic High School, ventured to Pound Ridge, New York, where she has been serving as a governess for the children of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Scherr-Thoss since November.

HARTINGTON—Sheriff Trautman is scheduled to appear in Cedar County Court. If he does not plead guilty to criminal charges alleging he purposely tried to hinder an investigation into alleged wrong-doing at the Cedar County Jail, Commissioners say they will file the civil action.

Dec. 15, 1999 HARTINGTON—Casey’s General Stores announced last week that they plan to expand the Hartington convenience store. The expansion will double the size of present Casey’s facility. The number of gas pumps will also double.

WYNOT—Wynot High School captured their second straight One-Act Play State championship and its third in four years this past weekend. Wynot competed with five other schools at the University of Nebraska-Kearney. Dec. 15, 1999

HARTINGTON—Don Carl, 72, died of a sudden heart attack at his home. Don and Joan Carl owned D&J Variety in Downtown Hartington.

They spent most of their lives in the retail variety business. They recently marked 43 years working in the store.

LINCOLN — Area schools received report cards of their own last week.

The Nebraska Dept. of Education’s 2003-04 State of the Schools Report is the fifth state Report Card — a comprehensive look at schools and student achievement. The report shows how students fared in math, reading and writing.
