A Closer L ook
If you’re looking for the definition of a couch potato, just take a look at the mugshot in this column.
Yep. That’s me all right. The classic couch potato. While I’m not typically a big TV watcher, I was glued to the tube, and the couch, for much of Friday, all of Saturday and again much of Sunday. Actually, it pretty much happens at about this same time every year. The NCAA Volleyball Regionals get me every time. And now that college volleyball is finally being recognized as a sport worthy of the television executive’s time, it’s finally getting easier to watch. It used to be I would have to make sure my internet connection and my computer were all synced up to my TV so I could watch the matches on TV.
This year volleyball moved into the big time, as ESPN and ABC carried the matches.
Any thought I may have had about getting some exercise or leaving the house for any reason was pretty much shot as soon as I saw the TV schedule.
Pittsburgh-Kentucky, Stanford-Louisville, Creighton-Penn State and, of course, Nebraska-Wisconsin. They were all great to watch, especially that sweep in Lincoln.
To add to my personal watching pleasure, I also watched my alma mater, the South Dakota State University Jackbrabbits, run rough-shod over Incarnate Word in the FCS football quarterfinals. The Jacks play in the semifinals Saturday for a shot at a third straight national title.
And certainly there will be more volleyball, as the final four teams head to Louisville in pursuit of a national championship.
I guess I better get my chores done early, and get my fingers limbered up, so I can vegetate on the sofa and jump between sports and networks, because there’s no way I’m leaving that couch this weekend.
