SPENCER - Hartington-Newcastle ran into a tough Boyd County Spartan basketball team Dec. 10 as the Wildcats fell 51-38 here in non-league action to slip to 0-3 on the young season.
The Spartans improved to 3-1. Boyd County kept the Wildcats at arm’s length the entire contest, going up by one after the first eight minutes then adding four points to the advantage by the intermission.
The lead grew to 35-28 after the third frame and the Spartans outscored HNS 16-10 in the final stanza to earn the win.
Austin Sudbeck led a balanced Wildcat offense with nine points, Brayden Lammers added eight, Cole Heimes had seven, Carter Kelly chipped in five and Cole Rosener had four.
Hartington-Newcastle was a respectable 4-of-12 from outside the 3-point line but a chilly 11-for-37 (30%) inside the arc.
Lammers pulled down 11 missed shots in the contest, Kelly had nine.
Cole Rosener had four assists and three steals. The Wildcats were set to take on 0-5 Niobrara/ Verdigre in Hartington Tuesdy and will finish the pre-holiday schedule on the road at Walthill on Dec. 20.
HNS will then host the Hartington-Newcastle basketball Tournament Dec. 27-30 with GNAC Conference foes West Holt, and Lutheran High NE coming to town.
