HARTINGTON - The Cedar Catholic Lady Trojans improved to 3-1 on the young season with two big wins over Mid State Conference foes.
The Lady Trojans took care of Norfolk Catholic, 42-26, Monday at the Msgr. Werner Activity Center. Friday, the squad took to the road to defeat O’Neill, 52-38. Complete statistics from the Norfolk Catholic game will be in next week’s Cedar County News.
In the game with the Lady Eagles, relentless defensive pressure led to offense as the Lady Trojans led from start to finish, but never by a comfortable margin until the final minutes of the game.
“I was very pleased with our effort and ability to turn them over for points,” said Cedar Catholic coach, Craig Wortmann. “We are still trying to get our turnovers under control but I like our pace and effort so far this year.”
The Lady Trojans led 12-7 after the opening eight minutes and increased the advantage to 27-15 by the halftime huddle.
The Lady Eagles turned the tables in the third, outscoring Cedar Catholic 14-8 to make it a little tighter.
“O’Neill was a very scrappy group and kept the game interesting all the way through,” Wortmann said. “This is why we love our conference.”
Addison Walter led the Lady Trojans with 17 points in the contest, Annisten Wortmann was next with 15 and Katelyn Arens added 10.
Walter just missed a double-double by pulling down nine missed shots, Wortmann swiped seven, Savannah Pick had six and Arens recorded five.
Arens also dished out four assists while Lauren Bernecker and Wortmann each had four steals.
“We have an older set of girls and they are working well together to make the most of their minutes,” said the coach.
Cedar Catholic was set to take on another Mid State opponent Dec. 17 when they travel to one of the top teams in Class C2, the Crofton Lady Warriors.
They will finish off the pre-holiday portion of the schedule with a home date with West Holt on Dec. 20.
