2009: HPS considering adding breakfast

Dec. 9, 2009

HARTINGTON — Hartington School Board members Monday discussed adding an extra meal for the students at the school.

The suggestion of looking into offering breakfast has come out of Wellness Committee meetings, Supt. Randall Anderson said.

“It could bring in some money for the lunch program,” he said. “Crofton serves an average of about 80 breakfasts a day. The little kids eat and the athletes like to eat the breakfast after an early morning practice.”

Board member Wendy Sudbeck said she knew of no downsides to offering a breakfast to the students.

“We had it at the Wynot School - it was wonderful,” Sudbeck said. “Some of the kids were getting on the bus early in the morning and they didn’t feel like eating breakfast first.”

Board member Brenda Steiner said a survey that had been put out last year spoke in favor of the school offering breakfasts.

The Hartington School will host a flu vaccine clinic on Dec. 16.

Hartington School Board members will consider a request from the Hartington Fire Dept. which involves the school campus near the Courthouse.

Members of the local fire department had met with Supt. Anderson about the possibility of buying some land from the School District to build a new fire house.

HARTINGTON — Cedar County Commissioners boosted the pay scale for themselves and other elected county officials during the Nov. 24 Commission meeting.

The base pay for elected county officials will go from $45,200 up to $48,700, which is almost an eight percent increase.

The salary for each of the three commissioners will jump from $26,892 to $28,643.

Benefits for county employees also include health and life insurance.

The new salary amounts go into effect in January 2011.

The salaries had to be set before Jan. 15, 2010, as the salary will be used to determine filing fees to run for a county office in the next four years.

One percent of the salary for 2011 will be used as the basis for the filing fee to run for a county office next spring, while one percent of the 2013 salary will be used for the filing fee for a county office in 2012, according to County Clerk Dave Dowling.

The Nebraska Association of County Officials recommended the 2011 base pay for elected officials in a county with the population/size of Cedar County’s be at $45,000.

The commissioners looked at the recommendation by NACO along with the salaries that city officials, business people and others in the area are receiving, Dowling said.
