Hartington City Council makes routine appointments

HARTINGTON — The Hartington City Council learned about a rate increase and made several routine appointments during their final meeting of 2024.

The Council will not meet again until Jan. 13 — the second Monday of 2025.

The Council Monday learned they may have to raise rates once again for garbage collection after receiving notification from L.P. Gill landfill that they would be raising the rates by $1 per ton for the city to dump its trash at the Jackson area landfill.

The Council then approved the re-appointment of the ambulance squad’s 20 members. The 37 members of the Hartington Volunteer Fire Department were also reappointed.

The Council then designated:

• the Bank of Hartington as the official bank,

• the Cedar County News as the official newspaper,

• the Kennedy, Pier, Loftus & Reynolds law firm as the official City Attorney.

• JEO Consulting Group as the City Engineer.

• Terry J Mead, JEO Consulting Group as the Street Superintendent.

• LeRoy Hansen as the City Zoning Administrator,

• Brittni Benscoter as the City Clerk – Treasurer,

• Casey Schulte as the Deputy Clerk.

• Corey Kramer as City Utility Superintendent,

• Dan Kathol as chairman of the City Tree Board with Leander Lammers and Esther Larsen as Tree Board members.

• Jason Dendinger, Lee Carl, Burnell Herbolsheimer, and John Kramer as members of the Citizens Advisory Committee for the Economic Development Plan.

Newly re-elected Board members Chris Bartling and Roman Sudbeck were also sworn into office to start their four-year terms.

The council also agreed to write off some uncollectible bad debt from several accounts at the transfer station and utilities. These accounts have all been on the books for quite awhile, and most of the people no longer live here, City Clerk Brittni Benscoter said.

The Council agreed to renew its $150 a month rental agreement with Kruse Hardware that allows them to rent a garage bay at city hall.
