HARTINGTON — The Cedar Catholic Lady Trojan basketball team earned its first win of the young season here at the Monsignor Werner Activities Center Dec. 7 with a 53-37 win over Omaha Roncalli after dropping a season-opener to Boone Central also at home, 59-48.
“I was happy with the opening weekend, we played well but we had some girls sick on Friday,” Lady Trojan coach Craig Wortmann said. “The girls played hard and now we have some film to learn from. We will use the next week to learn and improve for upcoming games.”
Cedar Catholic jumped out to a 12-7 lead after the first eight-minute session then increased it to 29-14 by the halftime buzzer.
The Lady Trojans added a touchdown to the lead in the third frame then coasted to the final score.
Lauren Bernecker put the Lady Trojans in front with a shot at the buzzer of the third quarter to make it 45-23.
Addison Walter hit Bernecker on a fast break to make it 48-28 early in the final period.
The Crimson got back to within 48-31 before Bailey Hochstein was fouled with 3:50 remaining on the clock, she converted both charity tosses and the lead was back up 19.
A little under a minute later, Walter converted one of two free throws and the lead was 20, 51-31.
The Lady Trojans coasted from there and the final score settled at 53-37.
Sophomore, Anisten Wortmann paced the Lady Trojans with 17 points on the afternoon. Lauren Bernecker added 13, Walter finished with seven and Hochstein chipped in six.
Bernecker snared nine missed shots, Walter had eight rebounds.
Katelyn Arens dished out three assists and Hochstein and Wortmann each accumulated six steals.
The Lady Cardinals came to town for the opening game of the season on Dec. 6 and turned away Cedar Catholic by the 59-48 final score.
Cedar Catholic will hit the road for the first time this season when traveling to O’Neill to take on the Lady Eagles on Dec. 13. Norfolk Catholic comes to Hartington on Dec. 16 then the Lady Trojans will travel to Crofton for a showdown with the Lady Warriors.
