HARTINGTON – Additional signage will be required at the intersections of each county bridge with a load weight limit.
The idea is to warn vehicles of an upcoming load-bearing bridge so they have a chance to turn around at the intersection, said Carla Schmidt, county roads superintendent.
She estimated about 77 county bridges would need to be marked on all sides. The new signs would be a duplicate of the load limit sign at the bridge with an added placard with the word “Ahead.”
“You and I both know that they just drive over the bridge, they don’t look at our signs anyway,” she said at the Cedar County Board of Commissioners last meeting. “Legally, you’re supposed to have it signed at those intersections. We haven’t started doing it yet, but it’s coming.”
She estimated each sign with a post costs about $60.
In other county news, plans are being made for a safety meeting for all county employees early next year.
The commissioners also agreed to close the courthouse at noon on Christmas Eve this year and will not be holding a regular meeting that morning.
Commissioner Craig Bartels was absent from last week’s regular county commissioners meeting.
