HARTINGTON — Hartington-Newcastle teachers and coaches Grant and Lisa Rolfes wanted to bring an experience they both enjoyed in high school to students here.
The Rolfeses were both involved in FCA themselves during high school at Newcastle, and in their junior year of college.
They’d love to have the kids here in the Hartington community experience the same positive fellowship that they did.
Grant Rolfes teaches high school math and is the head girls basketball coach, while his wife, Lisa, teaches high school Spanish and is the head cross country coach.
The couple is working to bring a Fellowship of Christian Athletes chapter into Hartington.
FCA is an international, non-profit organization that isn’t just for kids that are involved in sports, it’s for everyone who would like to be more involved with their Christian faith and in the community.
The Rolfeses said they believe strongly in the four core values of FCA — integrity, service, teamwork and excellence.
The Fellowship of Christian Athletes encourages young athletes to come together to praise God as well as learn how to play their sport with a Christian- like attitude.
This organization was created in hopes of seeing the world transformed by Jesus Christ through the influence of coaches and athletes. The interdenominational ministry was started in 1954 and is now nationwide.
In their recent first huddle, what the organization calls their gatherings, 30 kids showed up to participate in yard games, pumpkin painting, snacks and to listen to a message from the group leaders.
They feel the first huddle was a success and they're looking forward to holding more FCA meetings, and to hopefully see attendance grow.
They’re hoping to hold a meeting at least once a month. Depending on how the huddles go, they might end up meeting more frequently.
They are hoping to get as many teenagers involved as they can, not just from HNS, but from everywhere in the Hartington community.
They are working on plans for a possible Christmas party, Super Bowl party, and an event toward the end of the year for graduating seniors. They’re both looking forward to helping students to be more involved in FCA this year.
