1959: Vierguetz, Yost buy Cedar County newspapers

HARTINGTON — John Spork bought the pioneer drug store from his fathers’ (H.D. Spork) estate.

Dec. 6, 1939

HARTINGTON — Frank O’Furey, editor of the Cedar County News, has bought the Walthill Citizen, and will soon take over duties there.

Dec. 7, 1949

HARTINGTON — Harold Martindale was elected as the head of the Masonic Lodge in Hartington.

Dec. 2, 1959

HARTINGTON — Two county newspapers have new owners. Vance Vierguetz bought the Randolph Times from Stanley Norris and Bob Yost bought the Coleridge Blade from Vierguetz.

Dec. 2, 1959 HARTINGTON — C.J. Dendinger retired from his position with the government postal service after 23 years of service, Ernest Petsche is serving as a temporary carrier.

Dec. 9, 1964

HARTINGTON — Dr. D.F. Cline announced he has sold his practice to Dr. Fred T. Hanson of Holdrege. Dr. Hanson, a graduate of Kansas Sate University Veterinary College, took over Dr. Cline’s practice Dec. 1.

Dr. Hanson received his B.S. and D.V.M. degrees in June. He was graduated from Bertrand High School and entered the veterinary college at Kansas Sate in 1959.

He is not a total stranger in this area, having served his internship under Dr. Cline during the summer of 1963 prior to his senior year in college.

Dr. Hanson and his wife, Joanne, have a daughter, Laurie, who is 1 1/2 years old. The Hansons also purchased the Cline residence and are presently living in the basement there.

In May of 1953, Dr. Cline began his veterinary practice here.

His office at that time was located in the basement of the Hartington Hatchery building. After four years there he moved to his present location.

Also a graduate of Kansas State University veterinary school. Dr. Cline holds M.S., B.S., and D.V.M. degrees. He plans to enter the teaching field at a veterinary college. The Cline family will remain in Hartington until the end of the first semester at Cedar Catholic High School.
