WYNOT - Wynot head boys basketball coach Lee Heimes will set sail on his 25th voyage as the skipper of the Blue Devil’s basketball fortunes this season.
He lost four starters and seven seniors from last year’s team that finished third in the D2 Nebraska Basketball Championships with a big win over Sumner-Eddyville-Miller in the thirdplace game completing a 19-8 season.
Most coaches would spend sleepless nights with all of the talent and experience that graduated for Heimes last spring, but the Blue Devils return plenty of talent to make another run at Lincoln at the end of this season.
“We will be small but we are very quick and athletic,” Heimes said. “All of our guys are interchangeable and we could give teams problems.”
Just in simple numbers, Wynot returns a lot of players as the coach welcomed 24 prospective Blue Devils to practice the first day and 10 returning lettermen.
Seniors, Andrew Haberman and Cooper Oligmueller will be joined by juniors; Devin Brummer, Killian Steinhaus, Kotner Koch, Kason Koch, Justin Heimes, Jed Nelson, Carter Hans and Kingston Hans as the returning lettermen.
Those 10 will be joined by sophomores Nixon Heimes, Cash Lenzen, Braylon Hans and Lane Heimes; and 10 freshmen, Jace Lange, Bentley Guenther, Kason Hans, Dylan Wieseler, Payton Pick, Kameron Koch, Joseph Burbach, Trey Gowery, Blake Klug and Kreyton Koch.
“We will be a very competitive team and a team that works very hard,” Heimes said. “We have the potential to be very good both defensively and offensively.”
The Blue Devils are set to open the season at home against Bloomfield on Dec. 5 and end the pre-Christmas portion of the schedule at Wausa, a team Heimes tabbed as one of the top teams in the sub-district on Dec. 20.
In between, the Blue Devils have a couple of road games with Winside and Guardian Angels Central Catholic and a home contest with Homer.
Wynot will play in the West Point-Beemer Holiday Tournament on Dec. 28-30 and open 2025 at the Madison Classic in Madison, SD on Jan. 4.
January will find the Blue Devils on the road for five games and at home for four games, including games with Cedar Catholic and Pender.
February 3 through the 10th will bring the Lewis & Clark Conference Tournament then a home date with Wayne, a trip to Hartington to take on the Wildcats and another home contest, this one with Laurel-Concord-Coleridge will close out the regular season.
The Blue Devils are to compete in the D2-4 Sub-District Feb. 24-27 with Randolph, Santee, Wausa and Winside.
